HISTORY
In 2012, a small group of artists and writers left our city lives for Corsicana. We saw great potential in the historic buildings and the small town atmosphere.
Kyle Hobratschk’s transformation of the 19th Century Oddfellows Building into 100West gave birth to the Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency, the beginning of a gradually expanding creative community.
Over the years, a number of buildings in Corsicana’s Historic Downtown have been transformed into studios, a bookstore and gallery spaces.
Corsicana has become an internationally known artistic destination.
HOME
Some of us bought and restored beautiful old homes
in the nearby Historic Carriage District.
Artist Nancy Rebal purchased and restored
the 1866 Victorian Dunn-Ransom House.
The deserted, neglected 1912 Arts & Crafts house next door seemed at the tipping point toward demolition. However, a look through the window revealed astonishing unchanged detailing in woodwork, chandeliers, fireplaces, designed by a noted Dallas architect.
With Jean Searcy joining her as a business partner, Nancy purchased the house and a three year project of cleaning, restoring and completely updating the house began.
All new plumbing and electrical included the introduction of two central air and heating systems.
The revealed house was extraordinary. And empty.
THE WRITERS HOUSE
Writers and artists who attend the Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency often wish to stay longer to continue with their work-in-progress in solitude when their designated time at 100W is over.
Opportunity.
The Writers House was born.
The house was soon furnished by friends who believe in our vision of creative community, and The Writers House immediately became a valuable enhancement of The Residency experience.
Many resident alumni have extended their stays and returned to this special home, having found it a luminous space for inspiration.
NOW WE ARE OPENING THE WRITERS HOUSE TO ALL CREATIVE PEOPLE AS WELL AS 100W RESIDENCY ALUMNI.
The purpose of this house is to share the gift of this very special space for private work and creative inspiration.
The idea is for it to be financially self-sustaining through the rental fees of these visitors. It is not a non-profit.
It is not part of the non-profit Corsicana Artist & Writer Residency, but is closely associated with it and its mission.
THE WRITERS HOUSE IS A LABOR OF LOVE
